Choosing your first cigar: a considered guide

Wrapper, ring gauge, strength — a plain-spoken guide to the vocabulary that shapes a great first cigar.

The world of premium cigars can feel like it speaks a language of its own. Wrapper leaves are described by country, ring gauges are quoted in sixty-fourths of an inch, and strength ratings run from mild to full without ever being fully explained.

For a first cigar we recommend a Corona-format with a Sumatra or Connecticut Shade wrapper. The size is forgiving of pace, the wrapper is smooth and slightly sweet, and the smoke lasts long enough to appreciate without demanding an entire afternoon.

Above all: cut cleanly, light patiently, and never draw more than once every thirty seconds. A cigar rewards the unhurried.
